The Islamic group bombed Israeli territory, and the Israeli government retaliated. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched operation ‘Iron Swords’ and began calling up reservists.
The armed Islamic extremist group Hamas bombed Israel this Saturday (7) in a surprise attack considered one of the biggest suffered by the country in recent years.
The attacks took place mainly in the southern part of the country. Thousands of rockets were launched and the Israeli military stated that “several terrorists infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip”. See photos at the end of this report.
The Hamas group claimed the attack and stated that it was the beginning of a major operation to retake the territory (understand below). According to the international press, emergency services have already confirmed that more than 500 people have died.
Thousands more people were injured. Israel’s Health Ministry said at least 1,864 people were taken to hospitals for treatment. Of these, 326 are in serious condition.
In response to the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country was in a state of war. The prime minister launched operation “Iron Swords” and called an emergency meeting with security authorities. The country called up a large number of reservists.
“We are at war and we will win,” Netanyahu said. “Our enemy will pay a price he has never known.”
The country’s Defense Minister, Yoav Galant, said Hamas made a big mistake.
The Israeli Prime Minister also urged citizens to follow safety instructions. The recommendation is that people stay close to buildings and protected spaces.
After speaking with the Israeli leader, United States President Joe Biden stated that the country is ready to offer “all appropriate means of support” to Israel.
“I made it clear to Prime Minister Netanyahu that we stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support to the government and people of Israel,” he said.
